Market Values

Anyone can print a number. The hard part is being able to say where it came from. The idea is a value with its evidence attached — the sales it was drawn from, the condition it assumes, the market it applies to — and no number at all until those three exist.

What is a concept

  • No valuation, estimate or comparable-sale data exists.
  • VWX holds no sale records, and prints no figures.
  • The card below is a shape with the numbers left out.

Everything below is an illustration.

The shape of a range card

A 1967 Beetle, good condition, no options recorded.

Three cells, no numbers. The numbers are the part we do not have.

What a supported method would need

Sourced comparable sales.
Real sales of real cars, each one traceable to where it was recorded. Without them there is no range, only an opinion.
A stated condition scope.
"Good" has to mean something specific, written down before the sale is compared, not chosen afterwards to fit the answer.
A defined market.
A car sells for different money in different places. A value that does not say where it applies does not apply anywhere.

What it would never do

  • It would not price your car for an insurer.
  • It would not tell you what to pay.
  • It would not print a figure it cannot source.

Envisioned

  • A range that names every sale it was built from.
  • A condition scale written down before anything is compared.
  • A stated market, and silence outside it.
  • No range at all where the evidence is thin.
  • VWX will not authenticate a vehicle, and will not share anyone's contact details without their consent.

Tell us what you think

  • Would a sourced range change how you buy or sell?
  • What would you need to see before you trusted one?
