The human side of air-cooled Volkswagens
Under reviewStories
Two kinds of story sit in this garage. The written kind is here today: the model years told as editorial, and one truck being rebuilt in public. The kind we do not have is yours — the car, the trip, the person who sold it to you. That one needs your name on it, your permission and an editor. Until it has all three, this page shows what exists and what the rest would take.
What works today
What is a concept
- No owner story has been published, and none is being collected.
- There is nothing here to write in. The only thing you can send us is feedback.
- The model stories below are VWX editorial, not accounts from owners.
Stories you can read today.
One truck, and the years that made the rest.

1959 Single Cab
Working ~3-month calendar toward a running, roadworthy Single Cab with Jason — mechanicals, wiring, and interior (Manny) first; primer OK. Final exterior paint after. Engine locked; transmission still open.
Read the build recordModel stories
These are editorial: a year, what it changed, and what it was like to live with. VWX wrote them from the sources it holds, which is why each one carries the same caution.
Reference review: source-recorded details; historical accuracy has not been comprehensively verified.
Eight of them sit on records whose identity is still unsettled. Those are marked, and the words stand while the specifications do not.

An owner story is still a concept.
The old version of this page carried three first-person accounts by three people who do not exist. They are gone. A real one is harder, and it is the thing worth building: four conditions, and none of them are code.
The owner's own account
Written by the person who drove it, not by us on their behalf.
Consent on the record
Permission to publish, given in writing before anything appears.
Photograph rights
Every picture either theirs to give or credited to whoever took it.
An editorial pass
A read-through that separates what happened from what is remembered.
None of that exists yet. That is the whole of the honest answer.
Envisioned
- An owner's account in the owner's own words, published with their name on it.
- Written permission, recorded before anything goes live.
- Photograph rights held or credited, one by one.
- An editorial pass that checks a claim before it prints it.
- VWX will not authenticate a vehicle, and will not share anyone's contact details without their consent.
Tell us what you think
- Would you write yours?
- What would you want to read first — the car, or the person?
- What would stop you sending it?
