Where Is It Now?

You sold it. You watched it go. Somewhere out there it is either a barn find, a show car or a memory. The owner registry is our idea for closing that gap: past owners write down what they remember, present owners write down what they have, and the two find each other only if both agree.

What works today

What is a concept

  • No registration, vehicle search or introductions exist.
  • No vehicle record has been collected, and no list of interested owners is open.
  • Nothing on this page is submitted anywhere. The only thing you can send us is feedback.

Reconnect

The idea: find a Volkswagen you once owned, from whatever you still remember — a year, a colour, a dent.

Preserve

The idea: write down what you know about the car you have now, so the next owner inherits more than the keys.

Connect

The idea: let two owners of the same car meet, if and only if both of them want to.

How It Would Work

Three simple steps.

Create Your Profile

You would sign up, and say a little about your Volkswagen history. Nothing more than that.

Register or Search

You would add the car you have, or look for the car you had. Whichever way round it is.

Connect Privately

If the two ever met, VWX would pass the message, not the address. You would decide the rest.

A story waiting to happen.

"In 1978, I bought a Ruby Red Karmann Ghia from a guy in San Diego. VIN 145-something-something. I drove it through college, across the country twice, and finally sold it in 1987 when the kids came along."

Thirty years later, you still wonder about that car. Did someone restore it? Is it sitting in a barn somewhere? Did it end up at a show you walked right past?

In the registry we are imagining, you would post that story. Maybe the current owner will see it. Maybe they've been wondering about the car's history too. Maybe you'll finally get to see how she turned out.

What a listing would hold.

A registry entry is only as good as what someone bothers to write down. These are the four things we would ask for.

Privacy by design.

A registry that leaks addresses is not a registry. It is a mailing list.

How contact would work

What you would control

  • Change privacy settings anytime
  • Block specific users
  • Delete your listing entirely
  • No names or addresses ever shown publicly

Privacy Options

Public: Visible in searches, contact info shared with approved requests
Semi-Private: Visible in searches, VWX facilitates contact (no direct info shared)
Private: Historical record only, not searchable

Questions?

What if I don't remember my VIN?

If the registry existed: That's okay! You can search by year, model, color, and distinctive features. The "Looking For" board is perfect for incomplete memories.

Is this only for air-cooled VWs?

Our initial focus is 1949-1980 air-cooled models (Beetle, Bus, Ghia, Type 3, Thing), but we plan to expand.

How do I know if someone found my old car?

It would work by notification: a match against a registered vehicle, and alerts you set yourself. None of that runs today.

What's coming next?

Vehicle history integration, interactive timelines showing a car's journey, community features, and more. This is just the beginning.

  • Ownership timelines, so a car's history reads in order.
  • Sightings, so a car that turns up at a show does not disappear again.
  • Reunited stories, written by the two people who care most.
  • Photo comparison, for the moment you are almost sure.
  • VWX will not authenticate a vehicle, and will not share anyone's contact details without their consent.
